“An Afrocentric look at plant-based eating” is a particularly apt turn-of-phrase for the long-awaited debut cookbook, Veggielicious” by Mokgadi Itsweng. True to form, this Ana Trapido’s review on 702 is a gift. I have been raving about Mokgadi’s hearty, plant-based dishes for years and I can’t wait to dig in.

The Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy (BFAP) published its Baseline report on 15 September 2021. The promise of the 2012 NDP (National Development Plan) is generally now regarded as an elusive ambition. However, the Agriculture and Agro- processing Master Plan (AAMP) presents another opportunity to realign to the NDP’s vision of an inclusive and thriving agricultural and agro-processing sector. The theme BFAP theme “Fostering growth and sustainability of inclusive food value chains” is delightfully optimistic.
From the Petri dish to the table, cultured meat is coming to South Africa. Cultured meat start-ups want to disrupt conventional ways of eating and take as many animals out of the value chain as possible. The question is, are we ready? I think readier than most of us might think!

The Netflix documentary “Fantastic Fungi“, a visual feast for fellow mycophiles and plant- based eating fans. Everyone who has ever picked a delicious mushroom on an early summer morning will especially appreciate the joy of foragers who feature heavily.
